Fractional + .005" (oversized) Spiral Point taps. National Coarse and National Fine. High Speed Steel. Ground Thread.
Often used on tapped parts that will be plated.
Basic tap types:
Taper tap: 5-6 lead threads ground. The easiest tap for starting to thread a hole.
Plug tap: 3-4 lead threads ground. The most common tap: a "middle ground" tap for threading.
Bottoming tap: 1-2 lead threads ground. Used for continuing to thread a blind hole close to the bottom of the hole. It's difficult to start threading a hole with this tap.
Spiral Point tap: A tap with a chisled point that pushes metal chips ahead of the forming threads. Extremely useful for tapping through-holes (ie holes that extend through the work.) Often machine-driven. Spiral Point taps are not recommended for use in blind holes: the accumulation of chips can tend to bind and break these taps more easily than others.
