Involute Gear Cutters. 14.5° Pressure Angle, 20 DP-48 DP
Radial Tooth Face. These cutters may be resharpened repeatedly throughout the entire life of the cutter, without changing the original cutting form. High Speed Steel.
The Diametral Pitch of a spur gear is equal to the Pitch Diameter divided by the number of teeth on the gear.
The Diametral Pitch of a spur gear may also be calculated by adding 2 to the number of teeth on the gear, and dividing that total by the Outside Diameter of the gear.
Eight different cutters are made for each diametral pitch, each designed to cut a specified number of teeth:
# 1 cutter cuts 135 teeth to a rack.
# 2 cutter cuts 55 to 134 teeth .
# 3 cutter cuts 35 to 54 teeth.
# 4 cutter cuts 26 to 34 teeth .
# 5 cutter cuts 21 to 25 teeth.
# 6 cutter cuts 17 to 20 teeth.
# 7 cutter cuts 14 to 16 teeth.
# 8 cutter cuts 12 to 13 teeth.
For Example, to cut a 3" Outside Diameter spur gear with 22 teeth: the Diametral Pitch calculation is: (22 teeth + 2) / 3" = 8 DP, and the 22 tooth spec requires a # 5 cutter. Use an 8 DP # 5 cutter.
